SUBJECTS: Religion and Writing
GRADE LEVELS: 4th-8th
OBJECTIVES:
Students will learn about different vocations.
Student will learn how people respond to calls
to vocations.
Students will improve research skills.
TIME: Two 45-minute class periods to
create cards; other class periods for trading
cards and playing games such as Jeopardy or
Concentration
TEACHER MATERIALS:
Kids Explore Americas Catholic Heritage
- pages 109-132
Copies of the parish bulletin
Copies of the diocesan newspaper, if available
MATERIALS:
Kids Explore Americas Catholic Heritage
3x5 index cards
Pens or pencils
Colored pencils
ACTIVITIES:
1. Survey the chapter and other materials as
a class.
2. Have class discuss types of vocations. Include
in the discussion examples of why certain people
chose their vocation.
3. Display on overhead or pass out examples
the teacher has previously prepared of style
of card (picture on front/2-3 sentences on the
back)
4. Children choose one or two people -all students
should have different people. They then make
a card for each person chosen*
5. When all students are finished, the cards
could be displayed (for a few days if possible)
along the chalkboard tray.
6. The teacher may then have the students play
games with the cards or simply trade them with
each other.
EXTENSION: *This activity offers a great
opportunity for parish members, teachers, parents,
and others to come in and talk about their chosen
vocation. These people could be included as
subjects for the Trading Cards.
