Young Writers Workshop

DRESS UP AS YOUR FAVORITE SAINT

SUBJECT: Religion, social studies and language arts
GRADE LEVEL: Can be adapted for most grade levels.

OBJECTIVES:
Students will increase their knowledge of saints.
Students will improve their oral presentation style.
Students will demonstrate their research skills.

TIME: Two 30-minute research, writing and rehearsal sessions; one 30-45 minute session for final presentations.

MATERIALS:
Reference material on saints (Could use the Internet)
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage
Pens/pencils and paper
Clothing from home for costumes

ACTIVITIES:
Students choose a saint whom they admire and want to dress up like.
Research that particular saint’s life.
From research, briefly summarize the saint’s life and reasons for choosing him/her with intent of presenting to classmates. (For lower grades one may want to give specific question and some general ideas.)
Practice presentation with a small group of classmates.
Create a costume from items you have at home. Bring to school or wear on the day of your presentation.

EXTENSION: This idea might be good for a Halloween activity.
