EXPLORING SAINTS OFFICIAL MIRACLES

SUBJECT: History, religion and language arts
GRADE LEVELS: 4th - 8th

OBJECTIVES:
To improve research skills
To expand knowledge of Church history
To develop a greater appreciation for saints

MATERIALS:
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Books
Index cards
Paper and pencil
Access to saints’ information through the Internet or books

ACTIVITIES:
Develop the definition of a miracle and an official Church miracle for canonization (Pages 98-99, 102 in the Catholic Book)
Discuss miracles teacher and student are aware of in their own lives or other’s lives.
Read and discuss Canonization Miracles and the Miracle of Mother Cabrini pages 102-105.
Research saints and their official canonization miracles.
Have students report their findings back to the group. This can be done in different ways appropriate for your age group such as a holy card format, paragraph, research paper or oral sharing.

EXTENSION: Invite a speaker into the class to share information about their favorite saint and the official canonization miracles. You might contact the Archdiocese or Diocese office to make a connection for you. Ex: A Franciscan might wish to speak about St. Francis. A St. Vincent de Paul Society member might want to talk about St. Vincent de Paul.
