pages 173-174
MATERIALS (per group):
Two Twinkies per child
Your favorite frosting
Icing bags or tubes of frosting (different colors)
with decorator tips
Butter knife
ACTIVITIES:
Go over the idea of a horizontal line and a
vertical line.
Have students share ways they can remember these
vocabulary words. (For ex: The horizon is horizontal)
Make your favorite frosting or buy canned white
frosting.
Divide the frosting into parts and add food
coloring.
Each participant needs 2 Twinkies. Leave the
first Twinkie whole.
Take the other Twinkie and cut 1/3 off the top
to make the top part of the cross. Older children
can do this themselves.
Use a little icing to attach the horizontal
bar to the vertical pieces.
Frost the top surface of the cross.
Use icing bags filled with colored icing to
make five flower decorations and leaves on the
cross. (Excellent time to have a parent or grandparent
who decorates cakes help.)
NOTES: An ideal activity for a class
party.
