SUBJECT: Art, math and Religion
GRADE LEVEL(S): Can be adapted to all
grade levels.
OBJECTIVE:
To make cookies that remind us of Gods
love
To help children discuss measurement and how
we use it.
TIME: One class period a minimum of 30 minutes
(add time for baking and tasting!)
TEACHER MATERIAL(S):
Kids Explore Americas Catholic Heritage
pages 171-172
MATERIAL(S) (per group):
your favorite sugar cookie recipe or prepared
dough from a bakery or parent
lifesavers
zippered baggies(any size will do)
a towel
rolling pin or rubber mallet
cookie cutters of large and small shapes
parchment paper
a cookie sheet
ACTIVITIES:
Share background information from Kids Explore
page 171
Follow the recipe and make the cookie dough
using the ingredients suggested.
Separate the lifesavers by color and put each
set in a ziplock baggie.
Put a towel over the bag and crush the lifesavers
with rolling pin or rubber mallet.
Divide the dough among the participants equally
and have each participant roll the dough out
on individual pieces of waxed paper.
Use floured cookie cutters to make shapes from
the dough.
Use a smaller cookie cutter or a safe knife
to cut a shape out of the inside.
Put the cookie on parchment paper on a cookie
sheet.
Fill the hole with the crushed lifesavers.
Bake as directed.
