Young Writers Workshop

SHAMROCK COOKIES

SUBJECT: Art, math and Religion
GRADE LEVEL(S): Could be adapted for all grades.

OBJECTIVES:
To reinforce the concept of the Holy Trinity.
To help children discuss measurement and how we use it.

TIME: One class period a minimum of 30 minutes (plus add baking and tasting time!)

TEACHER MATERIAL S):
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage page 170

MATERIALS (per group):
your favorite sugar cookie recipe and ingredients or prepared dough from a bakery or parent
greased cookie sheet
parchment paper
rolling pins (optional)
flour(for the rolling pin and waxed paper)
green food coloring
cookie cutters in shamrock shapes
green sprinkles

ACTIVITIES:
Share background material from Kids Explore page 170.
Follow the recipe for making the sugar cookies using the ingredients suggested.
Add green food coloring to the dough until desired color.
Roll out the dough on the parchment paper and divide evenly among the participants. Have individual pieces of parchment paper with their name for each child participating.
Use floured cookie cutters to cut out shamrocks.
Decorate the cookie using green sprinkles.
Bake as directed placing each cookie in the pan on the parchment paper. (It will not burn!)
Allow time to cool and enjoy!

EXTENSION(S): Read a story about St. Patrick and the shamrock.
