Young Writers Workshop

PRETZELS

SUBJECT: Art, math and Religion
GRADE LEVEL(S): Can be adapted for all grade levels

OBJECTIVES:
To demonstrate the Christian symbolism of a pretzel
To help children discuss measurement and how we use it.
TIME: two class periods of one hour

TEACHER MATERIAL(S):
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage pgs. 172-173
Oven

MATERIALS (per recipe-a larger class will need two recipes):
One package active dry yeast
½ cup of lukewarm water
1 tsp. of sugar
4 cups of flour
egg, beaten
coarse salt or any other topping you may use
Teflon baking sheet

ACTIVITIES:
1. Read the pretzel story from Kid’s Explore pgs. 172-173
2. Dissolve yeast in the water
3. Add sugar, salt , and flour
4. Knead for 5-10 minutes
5. Add more flour if necessary to prevent stickiness
6. Divide the dough equally among the participants
7. Twist the dough into the shape of a pretzel
8. Place on Teflon baking sheet
9. Brush with beaten egg
10. Sprinkle with topping(s)
11. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes or until lightly brown
