SUBJECT: Art and Religion
GRADE LEVEL (S): 3rd -6th
OBJECTIVE: to make a traditional Good
Friday treat that shows the resurrection and
new life of Jesus.
TIME: one class period of 30 minutes minimum
(add time for baking and tasting!)
TEACHER MATERIAL (S): Kids Explore Americas
Catholic Heritage 165-166
MATERIALS (per child):
1 tsp. Cinnamon
½ tsp. Ginger
½ tsp. Allspice
2tbs. Grated orange peel
5 raisins each bun
1 pkg. of frozen bread dough- enough so each
child gets a piece (thawed)
ACTIVITIES:
Share background material from Kids Explore
pgs. 165-166.
Mix the cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and grated
orange peel in a bowl.
Take one slice of dough per person from the
package. Flatten the dough slices with the palm
of your hand.
Fold spices and raisins into the dough and pinch
together on the top.
Bake at 400 degrees F for 8-10 minutes. When
the buns are finished and cooled, put a white
cross on the top of each one with frosting.
Taste and enjoy the neat Hot Cross Buns.
EXTENSION (S): A classroom volunteer
could practice this recipe and actually do this
with the class. This could be an activity shared
for kids to do at home.
NOTES: This is easy to do and fun.
