Kids Explore America's Catholic Heritage
Young Writers Workshop

HISTORICAL DRAWING

SUBJECTS: Cooperative Skills, Reading, Art, Religion, Colonial American History, Catholic History, and Presentation Skills
GRADE LEVELS: 4th - 6th

OBJECTIVES:
Student will gain a better knowledge of Church history.
Student will share through an artistic product.

TIME: Three 45 minutes periods

MATERIALS: Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage - pages 1-37
Crayons, colored pencils and/or markers
Art paper

ACTIVITIES:
1. Divide students into five cooperative groups: Early Church History, Early American Exploration, Immigration, Religious Orders and Priesthood, Catholics in Society.
2. Have each group read their assigned section.
3. Each group will determine what each student will draw in the group.
4. Students will create a colored illustration of their assigned topic.
5. Groups will present their drawings giving each student in the group a chance to explain the significant of their individual illustration.
6. Teacher will design a bulletin board to display the drawings.

EXTENSION: Students could write a paragraph, 5 paragraph essay or paper on one topic from their assigned section.
