Kids Explore America's Catholic Heritage
Young Writers Workshop

CLASSROOM TIMELINE

SUBJECTS: Religion, History and Language Arts
GRADE LEVELS: 3rd- 8th

OBJECTIVES:
Student will gain a better knowledge of important people and events in Catholic history.
Student will develop the concept of when historical events happened.

TIME: Two 45-minute class periods

MATERIALS:
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage - pages 1-37
Other reference materials such as The Catholic Encyclopedia
Large index cards or papers to tack on timeline
A cord or ribbon to represent the timeline

ACTIVITIES:
1. Assign each student or group a section of the timeline.
2. Have students find information on one or more historical events or people represented on their section of the timeline.
3. Have students draw and color their own illustration to represent their selected historical events or people of that date.
4. Put the timeline (ribbon) on the wall and have the students complete the display discussing the relevance of each event.

EXTENSION: Have students research more information on another part of our Catholic heritage and add it to the group timeline.
