SKIMMING FOR SACRAMENT SIGNS

SUBJECT: Religion and Reading
GRADE LEVELS: 4-8

OBJECTIVE:
Students will learn the signs and symbolism used in the seven Sacraments.
Students will improve skimming skills.

TIME: One 40-minute class period

MATERIALS:
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage
Paper and pencil

ACTIVITIES:
1. Explain to students that they are going on a scavenger hunt to find as many signs and symbolism for that sign for the seven sacraments as they can in the “Growing up Catholic” chapter of Kid’s Explore America’s Catholic Heritage, pages 53-75.
2. Give the following example (not found in book). The priest’s stole is a sign of Reconciliation. It symbolizes the priesthood and penance.
3. Students can work individually or as a pair to list as many signs and the corresponding symbolism as they can for each sacrament. Allow only about 10 minutes for this.
4. Share findings as a large group and discuss and answer questions students have about the signs and symbolism. Allow students to supplement their lists with findings from other groups.

Baptism (p.57-58):
Water-symbol of cleansing and reminder of Jesus’ baptism
White cloth-sign of purity
Candle-stands for faith
Holy Eucharist (p62-63):
Bread-Jesus’ body
Wine-Jesus’ blood
Confirmation (p. 66):
New name- another saint who will help one live out one’s faith
Holy Chrism Oil-a spiritual seal, a sign of abundance and joy, cleanliness and strength, healing, beauty, and health.
Laying on of hands-being sealed with the Holy Spirit.
Matrimony (p.67):
Rings-a symbol of never-ending love and hope for a lasting marriage
Holy Orders (p.70):
Laying of hands
Chasuble-priestly clothing
Holy Oil- blessing that enables priest to consecrate communion
Anointing of the Sick (p.73):
Holy oil-symbol of the Lord’s help and freeing one from sin.
