Kids Explore America's Catholic Heritage
Young Writers Workshop

INTERVIEWING HEROES

SUBJECT: Religion /Language Arts/Social Studies
GRADE LEVEL: 4-7

OBJECTIVES:
Students will identify people in their community who have put their faith into action.
Students will interview them, and write short papers about them.
TIME: 1 month.

STUDENT MATERIALS:
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage books
Local newspapers, local TV and radio websites, church bulletins
Access to telephones
Paper, pencils

ACTIVITY:
Arrange students into small groups of 3-4. Small groups brainstorm ideas of people/heroes to interview and the interview questions.
Students will then get into “interviewing” pairs and choose one hero per pair to interview.
Students will contact and arrange for interviews with their chosen heroes.
As pairs, students will conduct their interviews.
Students then write a short paper (grade appropriate length determined by teacher) presenting the information from their interviews.

EVALUATION:
Students will be evaluated on their group work and papers.

EXTENSION:
Students may compile their interviews as a class “Hero Book.”
Students may prepare and give presentations to their classes.
