EXPLORING THE WEB

SUBJECT: Language Arts/ Reading/Computer/Social Science
GRADE LEVEL: 4-8

OBJECTIVES:
Students will increase their knowledge of the Internet.
Students will learn more ways people put their faith in action.
TIME: 4 days, approximately one 45-minute period each day

TEACHER MATERIALS:
Kids Explore America’s Catholic Heritage (pages 133-156)
Note: Teacher may wish to preview several web sites and provide URL List for students to use. Google is a good search engine.

STUDENT MATERIALS:
Internet access
Fact sheets (printed from this Web site)

ACTIVITY:
Students will spend two days in the computer lab collecting information
As information is collected, students will fill out a fact sheet on each person
Students will then spend one day writing a paragraph on the information from the fact sheet
On the final day, students will exchange papers and peer-edit each other’s work and then rewrite their own paragraphs
Students must turn in their
Fact sheet
First draft with peer editing comments and signatures
Final draft

EVALUATION:
Evaluate students on fact sheet
Evaluate students rough and final paragraph drafts
Evaluate students participation in peer editing
