Kids Explore America's Catholic Heritage
Young Writers Workshop

BULLETIN BOARD

SUBJECT: Religion /Language Arts/Public Speaking/Social Studies/Science
GRADE LEVEL: 4 and up

OBJECTIVES:
Students will polish research skills.
Students will be come aware of many ways to put their faith into action.
Some students may choose to get involved in service.
TIME: On-going.

STUDENT MATERIALS:
Newspapers, magazines
Cameras
Large bulletin board or wall space
Paper, pencils, staplers, push pins
Butcher paper
Computers

ACTIVITY:
As a class, brainstorm and choose a heading/name for the bulletin board.
Cover bulletin board or wall space with paper.
Students look for examples of individuals who have put their faith into action. They may look in for examples in newspapers, magazines, their own families and communities, or their school and church.
Students will present the information found to the class.
Students will type short paragraphs summarizing the service projects they found.
After presentations, pictures and paragraphs will be hung on the bulletin board.
Throughout the year, students can add their findings to the wall. If desired, the stories may remain up all year or, if space is limited, stories may displayed for shorter periods of time.

EVALUATION:
Students will be evaluated on their presentations and their story paragraphs.

EXTENSION:
In the center of the display, hang a world map. Using colored pushpins, the students will mark the places where their stories occurred. On the sides of the display, using color coordinated pins, students will hang their pictures and stories. Students will rotate stories as new stories are presented to the class.
